The History of ASIST

The ASIST programme (Advisory Support, Information Services and Training) forms part of the Employment-Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP) of the ILO. ASIST has presently two regional teams, ASIST Africa, based in Harare and ASIST Asia Pacific, based in Bangkok. More recently, the basis for a sister organisation in Latin America has been established.

The concept of a regional arm of the EIIP programme was operationalised in the early 1990s in the African Region. The concept of a establishing regional programmes of the EIIP started in the early 1990s in the African Region. The simple idea behind it was that a programme based in the region could more effectively respond to the needs of the constituents.

In 1998, funding was obtained from Danida to initiate a similar programme in the Asia and Pacific region. Core funding has also been obtained subsequently from DFID and from the ILO Regular Budget. The programme is now active in eleven countries covering the full range of EIIP focus areas. The programme maintains close links with ASIST-AF, the operational arm in Africa (established 1990), and the more recent initiatives in Latin America.

The core team presently consists of four senior professionals and three administrative staff based in Bangkok, and one engineering adviser based in Kathmandu. In addition, the team is supplemented by a number of short and long term international and national professional staff and consultants engaged in country level activities.
